This is for all the Tostitos

Whether you’re a dipper, dunker or a scooper, the art of combining tortilla chips and your favorite dip is a past time worth noting.  The versatility of the snack food gives it a wide appeal and has been made almost synonymous with sports-watching.  This tasty treat has made many memorable appearances in my life and I would like to dedicate this first post to praising it.

During the summers of my childhood, my grandfather would take my cousin, my brother and me to the Flat Iron Café before Indians games.  This place was a haven for my nacho indulgence.  Every time we went to an Indians game I would split a platter of loaded nachos with my cousin, Kevin.  The platter could have fed an entire bleacher section of people at Jacobs Field, but the mound of beef, cheese and veggies rarely made it out of our hands intact.  Kevin and I would have competitions to see how many jalapenos we could fit on one restaurant style nacho, oftentimes getting more than our own age.  Kevin has since retired from this competition because of acid reflux, leaving me as the undisputed heavyweight jalapeno holding champion of the family.

Chips and salsa were there for our family even during hard times.  After our dog Opie got hit by a car, eating chips and salsa while watching Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers dried our tears.  Without those salty snacks, I’m not sure the Rescue Rangers would have been able to save us from the tragedy of that day.
The inventor of the plastic nacho tray that can hold your nachos, cheese and salsa in separate sections should be thanked.  The simplicity of transportation and convenient design make it a staple at sports events.  This sport snack is so good that fans will put up with the prices that are as inflated as Kanye West’s ego.

Tostitos sponsors two BCS Bowl games, including the national championship game.  After Ohio State won the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl in 2002, someone even put a bag of the tortilla chips on top of Woody Hayes’s grave.  In the 4th quarter of Monday night’s Tostitos BCS National Championship Game, Brent Musburger let everyone know the stakes at hand.

“This is for all the Tostitos,” declared Musburger.

I would fight for every inch to get a hold of those crispy corn chips.
